AAFA Releases Industry Wide Restricted Substances List
The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) unveiled before more than 100 industry experts and compliance professionals at the AAFA Environmental Issues Seminar yesterday its inaugural restricted substances list (RSL), covering home textiles, apparel and footwear. The free list, with an introductory guide, can be downloaded at the AAFA website, www.apparelandfootwear.org, beginning July 9, 2007.
AAFA continues to pro-actively take a leadership role in ensuring that textile, apparel, and footwear firms have the resources to learn about and put in place a sound chemical management system, said Kevin M. Burke, President and CEO, AAFA. This new, annual effort will become an invaluable resource for everyone in the industries.
Currently, the list covers chemicals and other substances whose presence in a product is restricted through a government regulation or law. The list identifies the most restrictive iteration of that regulation. Future versions of the list are expected to include chemicals and substances whose presence, while not regulated by a government authority, are still restricted in practice. Further implementation resources are also being prepared.
The RSL was developed with the support of AAFAs RSL Task Force and reviewed by a Peer Review group. The task force includes AAFA staff and the following experts:
Sean Cady, Levi Strauss & Co.
John Eapen, American & Efird, Inc.
Elizabeth Hausler, Bureau Veritas
Andy Kahn, Kahn Lucas Lancaster
Helmut Krause, SGS
Lydia Lao, Intertek
Ben Mead, Nike Inc
Dawn Reeves, American & Efird, Inc.
Tommy Thompson, Hanesbrands, Inc.
Manfred Wentz, Oeko Tex
