Philly Low Voltage Products Roadshow plows through momentary “lights-out” accident, as record number of attendees pour into event

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA, September 17, 2007 . . . Even though a car accident knocked out a local transformer, and power, at the Valley Forge Convention Center here for nearly an hour, the ABB Low Voltage Products Roadshow kept right on going this past Thursday. This was great for the nearly 500 industrial automation products personnel in attendance – a record turnout for the ABB “Results-Driven Power Control” Show, which is traveling to five key regional markets this year.

The more that 250 customers and prospects crowding into the venue on Customer Day filled up the technical workshops held throughout the day. These workshops offer “must-know” expertise on a host of automation-related information, ranging from UL and NEC standards, to harmonic mitigation in industrial environments, to sizing motors correctly to drives, to a profile of motor types, and PLC installations and efficient, energy saving control panel designs.

“The workshop-session leaders were troopers, as the power went out, and all the rooms went to low levels of emergency lighting,” said Steven Jones, the show coordinator, and employee at ABB’s Low Voltage & Products Local Business Unit. “They never broke stride; simply described the slides they were seeing via battery power on their laptops, and kept right on presenting in real time. Attendees never left the rooms, and they kept asking questions!”

The keen interest in the workshops and exhibits was fuelled by Philadelphia metro-area ABB customers who came “looking to find new solutions to tough problems,” noted Kurt Schaffer, regional vice president for the ABB Power & Control Sales Team, “and they had firsthand access to engineers and factory experts, so the hard questions could be scrutinized at the show.”

Preparing Also for Customers’ Hard Questions

The day prior to customers’ arrival is Distributor Day, and focuses on briefing electrical distributors’ personnel (partners with ABB) on what is new with each of the 25 product lines on display. “It’s designed to pack distributors’ arsenal full of ammunition they can use when their customers arrive,” said Schaffer. “ABB helps develop the channel – learn how to deepen the solutions they can offer --, which, in turn, readies them to take customers around to the experts and product solutions that can help them most, as these customers arrive at the show.”

It is common to see distributor personnel and end users working closely in tandem, as they move from exhibits to various workshops, and vice versa.

A host of prospects were on the floor, too, to review ABB’s deep automation solutions offer to the industrial market. Personnel from both the U.S. Postal Service and Merck took hours to review the array of product solutions.

More Productive, Energy-Efficient Applications

The show offers visitors a close-up look at a wide berth of low-voltage products (drives, controls, and motors), automation, power, robotics and instrumentation solutions -- and the chance to talk with the product experts on all the lines.

“The show is designed to be a powerful tool that enables our distributors to make a host of sales calls -- in one day and one location,” according to Schaffer. “And customers can see a wide range of additional ideas and solutions from a vendor with a deep, global focus and range.” The show “seeds ideas that distributors and customers return to after the event ends,” he said. “In that way, the value of these interchanges extends far beyond the ending of the show itself.”

The Roadshow now travels to Nashville for the last stop of the year; see www.abb-events.com for a listing of all details and venues.
